[Art Story]–”A Friend’s Unusual Vacation”

—————————————————

Linda dialed her friend Mary’s cell number.

“Hello?” answered Mary.

“Hi lady”, said Linda. “How’s Chicago?”

“Oh–I’m so glad you called” said Mary. “I was thinking about calling you later.  I really need to de-compress–now that I’m here. Everything is so over-whelming……..I’ve unpacked and found a temporary doctor while I’m here. Six weeks is a long time to be away from home…….”

“Well–your daughter needed your house-sitting help,”  replied Linda. “You’re being a good mom by helping her out. Besides–Chicago is a great place to explore. You’ve got all the great stores and summer entertainment. You’re gonna have the best time going places and doing things.”

“I guess it won’t feel like house-sitting if I keep myself busy,” said Mary, fiddling with the phone base. “In a way, I’m already feeling a little bit excited about it. I just wish you were here with me…….it would be even more fun if the two of us could go exploring together.”

“Wish I were there, too” replied Linda. “But I’ve got that pile of new work for the up-coming Coffee House show…..staring me in the face. They all need hangers in the back. And I’ve got two paintings still waiting to be finished. On the contrary–wish you were here to help me with this show stuff.” Linda lifted up a spool of hanging wire, measuring out an approximate piece.

“Take lots of pictures with your cell phone,” said Mary. “And send them them instantly the night of the show. Can’t wait to see all the interesting people who will show up to see your artwork.”

“OK lady,” said Linda. “Gotta run–duty calls. Call me later tonite.”

[ Art Story]  “Creativity for Everyone”

The last student in the after-school art program ran over to his mom’s car in the car-pool line. Eve watched him get into the car and the car slowly drove off. She headed back into the building and went to her assigned room to finish the clean-up. Merrie, her assistant, had the clean-up well underway.

“Almost done? asked Eve.

“Yep–just about,” said Merrie.

“That was a spirited group, wasn’t it?” said Eve. “But they produced great artwork.”

“I only hope my future art tudents are as good as the ones from today,” said Merrie.  She was an art education student from the local college. She was finishing her final year.

“I’m sure once those future students meet you, they will love you to death, ” smiled Eve. “And they will learn a lot from you.”

“I sure hope so,” sighed Merrie. “I’m done putting everything away so  if there’s nothing else you want me to do, I’ll see you next week.”

“OK–my dear,” said Eve, as she pulled out her cart handle. “Drive safely.”

Later, Eve pulled into her driveway, turned off the car, and sat pensively…..knee-deep in her thoughts. Time for a new painting of her own…..

Sometimes, when working with kids, you give your all to them.  But occasionally, you have fleeting thoughts about not having time or energy for yourself. Eve had fallen into that trap, lately.  Somehow, though, she had a feeling that was about to change.

[Art Story] “Holiday Thoughts”

Emily put the last tray of cookies for the day into the oven.

She sat in the chair and wiped her brow.

It was good thinking to do cookie-baking ahead of time and freeze them–one less thing to do when the holiday rush starts and everyone gets so busy.

Her friend Marge was picking her up in a couple of hours and they were going to do a little early holiday shopping.

While the cookies were baking, she decided to grab that new book she had purchased a day or two ago.  As she turned the pages, her thoughts casually turned to that new painting she had finished yesterday. That image was going to be her holiday card this year and she was very pleased with it. She hoped that family and friends would enjoy receiving it.  She loved creating art for them.

And later, when she got back from early-start shopping–she planned to go online to a couple of her favorite art/craft artist sites and purchase a few gifts from them, too.  It’s a great time saver–and there’s so much fun stuff to choose from!

Ahhhh……the holidays…….shouldn’t we all get that fun-shopping started now and beat the rush?

[ Art Story ] “A Little Help From My Friends”

[ Art Story ]  “A Little Help From My Friends”

The handyman was hanging the dining room ceiling fan.

Lauren looked up at it, feeling pleased with her selection.

“Did all the parts fit smoothly?” she asked.

“Absolutely,” replied Ron. “I had one or two strange wires but I figured out what to do with them. They didn’t cause problems.”

Lauren payed Ron’s bill. He took his tool box out to his truck and drove off.

She decided to test the fan’s hanging strings again. She knew they worked but sometimes, you have an urge to try things several times after a handyman leaves.

Today, Lauren was finishing her only painting for the week. While she loved her artwork time, she had decided to give herself a week away from everything—-a “stay-cation”. No extra to-do stuff this coming week…..just relaxing and luxuriating in quiet thoughts.  No job–no family visits–only good friend visits.  As a matter of fact, two friends were coming for lunch tomorrow. It will be great to see them.

Lauren knew she needed this break. The last few months had been such a busy time………with her dad being hospitalized, and her sister Karen not doing well either.  She had tried to be there for both of them.

Painting had always been a good way to get away from all that was going on.

But Lauren recognized that sometimes, you need a break from everything you normally do. Sometimes, you just want to talk to and laugh with your friends.

[ Art Story ] “Thunder Storm”

[ Art Story ]  “Thunder Storm”

“Boo-o-o-o-oom!” cracked the thunder outside as the stormed raged on.

Carol flinched a bit–and then painted another stroke on her canvas.

“Hope this storm blows over soon”, she thought.  “I don’t want to have to cancel the dinner plans later.”  She added another paint stroke.

It’s funny–the loudness of the storm made her nervous–but not enough to stop painting. She couldn’t stop if she wanted to. She had a groove going with this painting. Carol added another paint stroke. She like how the paint she was adding filled this particular spot on her canvas. She rinsed out her brush and left it on the table.  “Time for a short thinking break” she thought to herself………

The comfy rocking chair in her studio was perfect for these thoughtful moments.

Carol rocked herself gently, letting her mind slowly wander. Already, she was thinking about her drawing for her next painting. She had several drawings she was planning to choose from……..any one of them would be a good starting point.

The minutes ticked away.  “Better get done what I planned,” she thought. “I’ve got to get cleaned up here and get ready for dinner soon.”

I had fun working on these first mini-paintings. I used acrylic paints and based on the concept I had in mind, the actual painting went quickly–although done in stages. There are a couple more in-progress and I’ll post them soon. And more will follow after that.  There’s a “guilty pleasure” in working on this series………..stay tuned. ;-)
